Mountain Navigation 101

Fundamentals of Land Navigation

Learn map and compass skills

A solid foundation in land navigation is essential for hikers, peak baggers, mountaineers, skiers, and anyone who enjoys traveling in the backcountry. Become proficient at using your map and compass. Plan your route and "stay found" in mountainous terrain. This class culminates with an orienteering skills challenge where students compete against the clock and each other to find a series of waypoints. A fun way to put all of your new skills to the test and find out how much you learned!

Incorporate the latest electronic aids into backcountry travel

Learn how to use today's technology to navigate

Build on the fundamentals of map and compass navigation by introducing electronic aids and tools. Learn to plan a route using online mapping tools, waypoints, and markers. Share maps with others and follow your path using GPS systems. This course concludes with an outdoor practical exercise that incorporates all of the electronic navigation tools.
