AIARE 1 is a three-day introduction to avalanche hazard management for recreational backcountry skiers and splitboarders. Students will develop a solid foundation in planning and carrying out a backcountry tour, recognizing and managing avalanche terrain, making informed travel decisions, and performing basic companion rescue techniques needed to locate and dig out a buried partner in the event of an avalanche.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the AIARE 1 course, the student should be able to:
Develop an effective tour plan for winter backcountry travel
Use the AIARE Risk Management Framework to make appropriate terrain choices in a group setting
Accurately identify avalanche terrain in the field
Practice and perform effective basic companion rescue skills
Course Details
PREREQUISITES . . .
Skiers and splitboarders should have confidence with their downhill ability and should be skiing blue and easy black in-bounds terrain
Students should be reasonably fit, the course begins at 7,965 feet (2,428 meters) and includes 500 to 1,500 feet (150 to 460 meters) of elevation gain per day, depending on snow conditions, weather, and group fitness
AIARE 1 and Avalanche Rescue are prerequisites for AIARE 2
It is also highly recommended that participants gain at least 30+ days of backcountry travel experience between taking an AIARE 1 and AIARE 2
AIARE 1 and Avalanche Rescue are also prerequisites for aspiring professionals looking to take a Pro 1 course
