DECISION MAKING IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN

DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR SNOWSHOEs

AIARE 1 is a three-day introduction to avalanche hazard management for recreational backcountry snowshoers and mountaineers. Students will develop a solid foundation in planning and carrying out a backcountry tour, recognizing and managing avalanche terrain, making informed travel decisions, and performing basic companion rescue techniques needed to locate and dig out a buried partner in the event of an avalanche.

Course Details

LEARNING OUTCOMES . . .

Develop an effective tour plan for winter backcountry travel

Use the AIARE Risk Management Framework to make appropriate terrain choices in a group setting

Accurately identify avalanche terrain in and out of the field

Practice and perform effective basic avalanche rescue skills

PREREQUISITES . . .

Participants should be comfortable hiking 2 to 5 miles a day for three days in a row

AIARE 1 and Avalanche Rescue are prerequisites for AIARE 2

Students should gain at least one season or 30+ days of backcountry travel experience between AIARE 1 and AIARE 2

AIARE 1 and Avalanche Rescue are also prerequisites for aspiring professionals looking to take a Pro 1 course

Snowshoes (Available for Rent)

Avalanche Gear: Beacon, Shovel, Probe (Available for Rent)

A detailed gear list will be sent in your welcome email about two weeks before the course begins

LOGISTICS . . .

Be prepared for three full days of learning

You’ll be in both indoor and outdoor classroom settings, with time spent sitting, standing, and moving in variable conditions
