field-based Course

Revisit key Rec Level 1 concepts while exploring updated techniques and evolving industry practices. This field-based refresher is designed for backcountry skiers and splitboarders who have already completed an AIARE 1 (or an equivalent A3-approved recreational Level 1 course). This course focuses on strengthening tour planning, terrain recognition, and real-time decision-making using the AIARE Framework. Perfect for recreational backcountry travelers looking to sharpen terrain management and group travel strategies. How many years has it been since you took your Level 1?

LEARNING OUTCOMES . . .

Revisit Decision-Making Framework to improve your daily tour planning

Practice using maps and terrain management tools in the field Review identifying avalanche terrain in the field and on maps

Improve your group communication strategies

Go over common decision-making heuristics

Apply real-time coaching and feedback from a professional snow educator

PREREQUISITES . . .

Skiers and splitboarders should be confident in their downhill ability and comfortable on blue and easy black in-bounds terrain

Snowshoers should be comfortable hiking 2 to 5 miles a day

Participants must have a certificate of completion from an A3-approved Recreational Level 1 course; there is no time limit on this prerequisite

A rescue course is not required; however, we encourage all backcountry users to take a rescue course regularly

Students should have at least 8+ days of backcountry travel experience applying a decision-making framework after completing their A3-approved Recreational Level 1 course and before enrolling in this Refresher course

Students should gain at least one season or 30+ days of backcountry travel experience between AIARE 1 and AIARE 2

AIARE 1 and Avalanche Rescue are also prerequisites for aspiring professionals looking to take a Pro 1 course
